Residence Requirements:

  THERE ARE NO RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION IN THIS EXAMINATION.  There is one anticipated vacancy at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation.

Examples of Duties:

Nursing Informatics Manager manages the use of automated information in the professional nursing care given to patients, utilizing the nursing process at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation; 

Maintains high availability, accuracy, integrity, and security of information technology components, application software, and data;

Accurately assesses application software to ensure that system meets requirements of regulatory agencies;

Monitors and maintains system performance within established guidelines; Demonstrates use of independent judgment and decision making;

Formulates plan for implementation of hardware and software in clinical areas, ensuring that the needs of all clinical staff are met;

Develops clear goals for integration of software and hardware to meet patient care requirements;

Maintains productive, open, and visible communications with all levels of personnel;

Responds appropriately to life threatening emergencies;

Performs basic nursing procedures and patient care as required;

Uses clinical experience to develop appropriate information systems;

Provides for active participation in system development, use, and evaluation by all levels of end users;

Develops policy and procedures for the use of information technology and information systems for the Department of Nursing;

Demonstrates competence in transcribing physician orders;

Revises nursing software to reflect interventions utilized in the delivery of care;

Evaluates effectiveness of established systems, including conduction of research studies, as applicable; Evaluates equipment, hardware, and software acquisitions for use by all clinical staff.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates must meet the following requirements on or before the date of the written test:

Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and four (4) years of clinical nursing experience, including two (2) years of experience working with clinical information systems.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession and maintenance of a current license and registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State at time of application and throughout period of employment;

Possession and maintenance of Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification at time of application and throughout period of employment

1.  Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.  

2. Your degree and/or college credit must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the New York State Education Department as following acceptable educational practices.  A grade of "D" or better is necessary for a course to be credited as successfully completed.  If your degree and/or college credit was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency.  You can write to this Department for a list of acceptable companies providing this service; you must pay the required evaluation fee.

Subjects of Examination:

Scopes / Subjects of examination: A test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and /or abilities in the following areas.

Understanding and interpreting written material

These questions test for the ability to understand and interpret written material. You will be presented with brief reading passages and will be asked questions about the passages. You should base your answers to the questions only on what is presented in the passages and not on what you may happen to know about the topic.

Basic medical procedures

These questions test for knowledge of basic medical procedures. Questions may cover such topics as checking vital signs; normal findings for vital signs; what constitutes a medical emergency; emergency first aid for shock, choking, bleeding, seizures, heart attack, burns; etc.

Medical terminology

These questions test for knowledge of words, phrases, and abbreviations used in medical diagnosis and therapy. Questions may cover such topics as diseases, symptoms, pharmaceuticals, medical specialties, anatomy, treatment modalities, medical supplies, and medical equipment. Prefixes and suffixes used in medical terminology may also be included.

NOTICE TO CANDIDATES: Unless otherwise noted, candidates are permitted to use quiet, hand held, solar or battery powered calculators. Devices with typewriter keyboards, "Spell Checkers", “Personal Digital Assistants", "Address Books", "Language Translators", "Dictionaries", or any similar devices are prohibited. You may not bring books or other reference materials.

A $20.00 filing fee is required for this exam. The required fee must accompany your application.
