Residence Requirements:

THERE ARE NO RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION IN THIS EXAMINATION. There is one anticipated vacancy at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation.

Examples of Duties:

Nursing Team Leader-Orthopedics assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and assigns nursing care for an Orthopedics Unit at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation; 

Provides management oversight and supervises nursing activities; ensures utilization of assessment, care planning, implementation of services, documentation and evaluation in delivery of patient care;

Develops and implements orthopedics and safety protocols, policies and procedures;

Ensures medical and nursing orders are implemented in a timely manner;

Develops, implements and coordinates delivery of pre- and post-hospitalization orthopedics education to patients and caregivers;

Participates as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team; makes rounds with interdisciplinary treatment team;

Identifies areas for performance improvement opportunities; develops, implements and evaluates performance improvement initiatives;

Schedules and assigns staff to maintain educational preparation and patient acuity;

Monitors staff performance to ensure patient care plan is implemented and that documentation of patient care is accurate and complete;

Monitors compliance of personnel with departmental and hospital policies; takes corrective action when necessary;

Assists with performance evaluation and progressive discipline;

Orients new staff to their duties; conducts formal and informal educational programs for staff;

Serves as a clinical resource person, patient advocate and clinical role model; intervenes in patient problems and provides resolution as appropriate;

Keeps abreast of industry trends for incorporation into protocols, policies and procedures;

Monitors and utilizes supplies and equipment in a fiscally responsible manner;

Performs tasks normally delegated to lower-ranking nursing employees as required;

Organizes and participates in meetings and committees as required.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates must meet one of the following requirements on or before July 1, 2019:

A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and two (2) years of registered professional nursing experience, including one (1) year of professional nursing experience in an orthopedics setting; or:

B) Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing and two (2) years of registered professional nursing experience in an orthopedics setting; or:

C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Possession of a license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse as issued by the New York State Department of Education at the time of appointment; and
2. Possession of Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification at time of appointment; and
3. Possession of Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification at time of appointment; and
4. Completion of a minimum of sixteen (16) hours clinical time on a patient care unit per month.

1. Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting the experience requirements. 

2. Your degree and/or college credit must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the New York State Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. A grade of "D" or better is necessary for a course to be credited as successfully completed. If your degree and/or college credit was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. You can write to this Department for a list of acceptable companies providing this service; you must pay the required evaluation fee.

The New York State Department of Civil Service has not prepared a test guide for this examination. 

Subjects of Examination:

The only subject of examination will be an evaluation of your training and experience.  You are therefore, asked to include in your application a summary of all pertinent training and experience in sufficient detail so that your background may be evaluated against the duties of the position.

In your summary of training include all college course work, formal in-service training, and seminars you have attended.  You must specify either the number of credits received or the number of contact hours and dates of attendance.  Also include a copy of your professional license.  Specify the date that your license was first issued.

In your summary of experience, you must specify the dates of your employment, the number of hours worked per week, your title, and the main duties for each.  Be specific; vagueness and ambiguity will NOT be resolved in your favor.  Candidates who submit incomplete applications or documentation may be disqualified.
