Residence Requirements:

CANDIDATES MUST HAVE BEEN LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY FOR AT LEAST ONE MONTH IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING THE DATE OF THE WRITTEN TEST AND MUST BE LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY AT THE TIME OF APPOINTMENT. At present there are two vacancies in the Erie County Sheriff's Office.

Examples of Duties:

A Records Clerk-Holding Center performs clerical operations related to the maintenance of inmate records and accounts;

Checks the accuracy of commitments for all inmates and accurately computes the actual time served by each inmate sentenced to County time;

Receives and maintains warrants and detainees filed against inmates by Law Enforcement Agencies;

Sets up and arranges transportation of inmates to Court;

Prepares Court list for inmates housed in the Holding Center and Erie County Correctional Facility Annex;

Maintains current and postponed Court dates of all inmates;

Updates and maintains commitments, dates, times or Courts and bail information in the computer;

Keeps statistics for New York State Department of Corrections and transmits data via computer to the State daily;

Maintains inmates cash accounts;

Takes bails for all Towns in Erie County and Buffalo City Court when Court is closed;

Keeps track of housing location for all Sheriff's custody inmates in the Holding Center and Erie County Correctional Facility Annex;

Provides information to family members/friends, all outside Law Enforcement agencies throughout the United States;

Screens inmates eligible to be housed at the Correctional Facility Annex, following criteria set up administration;

Notifies Law Enforcement Agencies concerning "pick up" of inmates such as Court programs, released under supervision First Time/Last Time, drug treatment programs, Law Enforcement Agencies from other States and Counties;

Responsible for releasing inmates (checking paperwork and verifying with Court if there is a problem);

Sends teletypes and faxes to outside Law Enforcement Agencies if warrants are found in warrant check;

Answers routine telephone inquiries related to the Records Office of the Erie County Holding Center.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must meet the following requirements on or before the date of the written test:

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two years of office clerical experience which involved typing, the maintenance of records and the operation of data entry equipment.

Notes:

1. Individuals will be canvassed to work either second or third shift.

2. Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.

Subjects of Examination: A test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and /or abilities in the following areas.

Name and number checking
These questions test for the ability to distinguish between sets of words, letters, and/or numbers that are almost exactly alike. Material is usually presented in two or three columns, and you will have to determine how the entry in the first column compares with the entry in the second column and possibly the third. You will be instructed to mark your answers according to a designated code provided in the directions.

Operations with Letters and Numbers
These questions test for skills and abilities in operations involving alphabetizing, comparing, checking and counting. The questions require you to follow the specific directions given for each question which may involve alphabetizing, comparing, checking and counting given groups of letters and/or numbers.

Understanding and interpreting written material
These questions test for the ability to understand and interpret written material. You will be presented with brief reading passages and will be asked questions about the passages. You should base your answers to the questions only on what is presented in the passages and not on what you may happen to know about the topic.

NOTICE TO CANDIDATES: Unless otherwise noted, candidates are permitted to use quiet, hand held, solar or battery powered calculators. Devices with typewriter keyboards, "Spell Checkers", “Personal Digital Assistants", "Address Books", "Language Translators", "Dictionaries", or any similar devices are prohibited. You may not bring books or other reference materials.
