Residence Requirements:

RESIDENCE REQUIREMENTS:  THERE ARE NO RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION IN THIS EXAMINATION.  At present there is one vacancy at the Erie County Medical Center.

A promotion examination will be held at the same time as this examination. The list resulting from the promotion examination will be used first but appointments from this open competitive examination are anticipated. Use of the list may be suspended after it is one year old for any position which it is practical to fill through a new promotion examination.

Examples of Duties:

Senior Biochemistry Technologist supervises and performs biochemical procedures in a unit of a clinical laboratory; 
Performs a number of specific tests in clinical chemistry, toxicology and endocrinology for the presence of chemical constituents such as enzymes, drugs, hormones, etc., utilizing specialized equipment, preparing reagents, solutions and calibrating equipment;
Assists in the training program of students and technical personnel by demonstrating procedures, overseeing work practice and evaluating progress;
Supervises workers by making assignments, reviewing and evaluating their work;
Maintains equipment and supplies of unit;
Prepares reports;
Keeps records of unit;
Keeps abreast of latest developments in the field;
Collects specimens from patients, which may include phlebotomy;
Performs other activities that contribute to patient care and/or maintenance of compliance with various regulations. 

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates must meet the following requirements on or before May 18, 2016:

A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Technology, Medical Technology or related title which meets the standards set forth in Title 8, Article 165 of New York State's Education Law and Subpart 79-13 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education and six years of technical clinical laboratory experience; or:

B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in one of the physical or biological sciences and seven years of technical clinical laboratory experience; or:

C) Possession of a license or limited permit to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist as issued by the New York State Education Department and six years of technical clinical laboratory experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Eligibility for licensure or limited permit to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist at time of application;
  2. Possession of a license or limited permit to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist as issued by the New York State Education Department at time of appointment;
  3. Possession of a license to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist as issued by the New York State Education Department at time of permanent appointment.

NOTES:  1.  Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting the experience requirements.  2.  Your degree and/or college credit must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the New York State Education Department as following acceptable educational practices.  If your degree and/or college credit was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency.  You can write to this Department for a list of acceptable companies providing this service; you must pay the required evaluation fee.

Subjects of Examination:

SUBJECT OF EXAMINATION: The only subject of examination will be an evaluation of your training and experience. You are, therefore, asked to include in your application a summary of all pertinent training and experience in sufficient detail so that your background may be evaluated against the duties of the position.

In your summary of training include all college course work, formal in-service training, and seminars you have attended. You must specify either the number of credits received or the number of contact hours and dates of attendance. Also include a copy of your professional license. Specify the date that your license was first issued.

In your summary of experience, you must specify the dates of your employment, the number of hours worked per week, your title, and the main duties for each. Be specific; vagueness and ambiguity will NOT be resolved in your favor. Candidates who submit incomplete applications or documentation may be disqualified.
