Residence Requirements:

CANDIDATES MUST HAVE BEEN LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY FOR AT LEAST ONE MONTH IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING THE DATE OF THE WRITTEN TEST AND MUST BE LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY AT THE TIME OF APPOINTMENT. There are two current vacancies in the Town of Amherst and the 2020 salary rate is $19.47 - $31.26 per hour.  The eligible list resulting from this examination will be used to fill this vacancy and other appropriate vacancies which may occur in municipalities or districts under the jurisdiction of Erie County Civil Service while this list is active.

Preference may be given to successful candidates who have been residents of the municipality in which the appointment is to be made for one month preceding the date of the certification of the eligible list and who are residents of the municipality at the time of appointment.  Non-residents may be required to become a resident of the appointing municipality if local law so states.

A promotion examination will be held at the same time as this examination. The list resulting from the promotion examination will be used first but appointments from this open competitive examination are anticipated. Use of the list may be suspended after it is one year old for any position which it is practical to fill through a new promotion examination

Examples of Duties:

A Senior Wastewater Facilities Mechanic repairs and maintains all types of wastewater treatment plant; 

Assists with supervision of work projects on equipment by estimating and planning needs, lays out work and inspects results;

Assigns maintenance mechanics, helpers and laborers to projects;

Instructs workers;

Assists them with difficult problems and evaluates performance;

Maintains records of projects;

Requisitions supplies and confers with supervisor on status and progress of work

Performs  major and minor repairs on all wastewater treatment plant such as portable pumps, standy generators, flushers, TV units, grouters and other equipment;

Makes major and minor repairs on all wastewater treatment plant equipment and process piping, e.g. sludge thickener, centrifuge, pumps, blowers, conveyors, etc.

 

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates must meet one of the following requirements on or before the date of the written test:

A) Graduation from a (2) year college with an A.A.S. degree in Electrical Technology, Mechanical Technology or Construction Technology and four (4) years of satisfactory experience* in the maintenance and repair of industrial machinery and equipment, one year of must have been in a supervisory**  capacity; OR

B.) Graduation from a standard senior high school and six (6) years of satisfactory experience* in the the maintenance and repair of industrial machinery and equipment, one year of must have been in a supervisory**  capacity. Note: graduation from a vocational high school with courses relating to electrical ormechanical repairs may be substituted for one year of above general experience; OR

C.) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).

1. *Graduation from a vocational high school with courses relating to electrical or mechanical repairs may be substituted for one year of above general experience.

2. **A supervisory position is defined as a position in which supervision was a major responsibility of the job. Occasional or partial supervision of work crew is not acceptable supervisory experience.

3. Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.

4. Your degree and/or college credit must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the New York State Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. A grade of "D" or better is necessary for a course to be credited as successfully completed. If your degree and/or college credit was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. You can write to this Department for a list of acceptable companies providing this service; you must pay the required evaluation fee.

Subjects of Examination:

Subjects of Examination: A test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and /or abilities in the following areas.

Operation, maintenance, and repair of pumps, motors, valves, and mechanical and electrical equipment
These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices involved in the operation, maintenance, and upkeep of various types of mechanical and electrical equipment, including pumps, valves, electric motors, and similar types of equipment.

Reading and interpretation of plans and specifications
These questions test for the ability to read and interpret typical plans, layouts, diagrams, and technical specifications related to mechanical or electrical equipment and systems.

Inspection, operation, maintenance, and repair of basic mechanical equipment
These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices involved in the inspection, operation, maintenance, and upkeep of basic mechanical equipment such as gears, shafts and bearings, power drives, and similar types of basic machinery and mechanical equipment.

Tools of the trade (mechanical)
These questions test for knowledge of the tools, instruments, and equipment typically used in the mechanical trades, including the proper and safe use of this equipment.

NOTICE TO CANDIDATES:  It is recommended that candidates use a quiet, hand held, solar or battery powered calculator.  Devices with typewriter keyboards, "Spell Checkers", “Personal Digital Assistants", "Address Books", "Language Translators", "Dictionaries", or any similar devices are prohibited.  You may not bring books or other reference materials.
