Residence Requirements:

CANDIDATES MUST HAVE BEEN LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY OR AN ERIE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT* FOR AT LEAST ONE MONTH IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING THE DATE OF THE WRITTEN TEST AND MUST BE LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY OR AN ERIE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT* AT THE TIME OF APPOINTMENT. Preference may be given to successful candidates who have been residents of the municipality in which the appointment is to be made for one month preceding the date of the certification of the eligible list and who are residents of the municipality at the time of appointment. Non-residents may be required to become a resident of the appointing municipality if local law so states. * Candidates who reside in a school district which, for civil service purposes is administered by the Erie County Personnel Commissioner, but who are not legal residents of Erie County may apply for examination. However they will be certified for appointment only in the school district in which they are legal residents.

There is one vacancy at West Seneca Central School District with an annual salary of $52,151 - $70,935. **Salaries vary among municipalities and districts. The eligible list resulting from this examination will be used to fill this vacancy and other appropriate vacancies which may occur in municipalities or districts under the jurisdiction of Erie County Civil Service while this list is active.

Under current New York State Law, candidates seeking employment with school districts in New York State will be required to undergo fingerprinting and a criminal history background check prior to appointment. A processing fee may be required.

Examples of Duties:

Supervisor of Printshop and Graphics coordinates the overall operation of the print shop and graphics section as well as assisting with the operation of the equipment necessary for its efficient operation;

Supervises and assists in work activities involved in the duplicating and printing of large quantities of office materials such as forms, manuals, cards, letters and bulletins and
graphic arts for posters and camera ready originals;

Supervises and operates such machines as staplers (automatic), davidson, offset, multi lith, commercial paper cutters, punches and photocopier;

Supervises and operates camera to produce negatives for the use in plate making and photo typesetting machines;

Supervises the work of the unit by scheduling work, assigning job orders and machines, inspecting and approving first runs for clarity, alignment and registration;

Supervises machine operators by assigning work, training in procedures, assisting with machine failures and inspecting results;

Supervises the maintenance of machines and equipment, requisitions paper stock, inks, parts and supplies;

Maintains file of stencils and plates;

Maintains records of work activity and inventory;

Advises departmental personnel on reproduction methods;

Contacts outside vendors on supplies and negatives.

Qualifications:

 QUALIFYING EXPERIENCE FOR TAKING THE TEST: Candidates must be permanently employed in the competitive

class and must be serving and have served continuously on a permanent or contingent permanent basis in the competitive class for 36 months immediately preceding the date of the written test in the position of Senior Offset Machine Operator or 48 months  as Offset Machine Operator.

Subjects of Examination:

Subjects of Examination: A test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and /or abilities in the following areas.

Advising and interacting with others
These questions test for the ability to interact with other people in order to gather and present information and to provide assistance and advice in a courteous and professional manner.

Principles and practices of publication production
These questions test for knowledge of the basic principles, practices and terminology related to the production of printed materials. Topics may include size, format, layout, paper and ink, reproduction methods, and design of text and graphics.

Publication production management
These questions test for the ability to manage the operations of a print shop which includes both traditional and electronic formats. Topics may include determining printing needs with customers; making recommendations regarding publication or reproduction method; and knowledge of printing and publication costs and methods.

Supervision
These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices employed in planning, organizing, and controlling the activities of a work unit toward predetermined objectives. The concepts covered, usually in a situational question format, include such topics as assigning and reviewing work; evaluating performance; maintaining work standards; motivating and developing subordinates; implementing procedural change; increasing efficiency; and dealing with problems of absenteeism, morale, and discipline.

NOTICE TO CANDIDATES: Unless otherwise noted, candidates are permitted to use quiet, hand held, solar or battery powered calculators. Devices with typewriter keyboards, "Spell Checkers", “Personal Digital Assistants", "Address Books", "Language Translators", "Dictionaries", or any similar devices are prohibited. You may not bring books or other reference materials.

INFORMATION FOR PROMOTION CANDIDATES 

Unless otherwise indicated, the eligible list resulting from this examination will have a duration of four years and will not supersede existing promotional lists, if any.

RATINGS REQUIRED:  Test is rated on a scale of 100 with a passing mark at 70.  Test instructions may further divide the tests into parts and set minimum standards for each part.

Points will be added to scores of candidates who achieve a passing mark as follows: Seniority:  For each year of service in the classified service:

Less than 1 year……………………..................…0 points

1 year up to 6 years…………….…........................1 point

Over 6 years up to 11 years.....………......….........2 points

Over 11 years up to 16 years….…........….........…3 points

Over 16 years up to 21 years………..................…4 points

VETERANS:  Disabled and non-disabled veterans as defined in Section 85, New York State Civil Service Law, will have 5 and 2.5 points, respectively added to their earned scores if successful in the examination.  You must claim these credits when you file application but you have an option to waive them any time prior to appointment.  If you have already used these credits for a permanent position in NYS, you may not claim them again.
