Residence Requirements:

RESIDENCE REQUIREMENTS: THERE ARE NO RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION IN THIS EXAMINATION. There is one anticipated vacancy at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation.

Examples of Duties:

Telecommunications Technician performs skilled work in the installation, operation, testing, repair and maintenance of a telephone system at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation; 

Performs moves, changes and additions/installations to telephone system;

Submits updates and changes to telephone directory;

Responds to installation and repair requests; performs troubleshooting procedures and remedial actions;

Maintains, repairs and installs telephones, key systems, voice and data systems (VoIP), switches (PBX), wire, cable, jacks, circuits and telephone apparatus;

Programs PBX switches and key systems for moves, changes and additions to telephone system;

Implements communications software changes to computer-controlled switching systems;

Performs scheduled preventative maintenance and testing on lines, trunks switches, circuits, etc.;

Documents telephone system by labeling and routing equipment; creates configuration diagrams and specifications;

Assists in planning moves, changes and additions to telephone system;

Assists in documenting telephone system by labeling and routing equipment; assists in creating configuration diagrams and specifications;

Ensures correct moves, changes and additions are reflected in telephone bills;

Assists in ordering and maintains inventory of telephone lines, equipment and software; returns defective equipment;

Maintains database of telecommunications inventory.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates must meet one of the following requirements on or before the date of the written test: 

A.) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a sixty (60) semester credit hours and three (3) years of experience in the installation, repair and maintenance of an enterprise-wide telecommunications system; or:

B.) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and five (5) years of experience in the installation, repair and maintenance of an enterprise-wide telecommunications system; or:

C.) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).

Notes:

1. Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting the experience requirements.

2. Your degree and/or college credit must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the New York State Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. A grade of "D" or better is necessary for a course to be credited as successfully completed. If your degree and/or college credit was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. You can write to this Department for a list of acceptable companies providing this service; you must pay the required evaluation fee.

Subjects of Examination:

SUBJECTS OF EXAMINATION: A written test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and /or abilities in the following areas:

1. Telecommunications systems installation, servicing, troubleshooting and repair, including test equipment and tools

These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices involved in the installation, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of telecommunications systems and related equipment, including testing and repair procedures, equipment, and tools.

2. Interpretation of technical manuals, drawings, and specifications

These questions test for the ability to read and understand technical written material, specifications, and diagrams involving telecommunications and related systems and equipment.

3. Telecommunications terminology, equipment, and operation

These questions test for knowledge of telecommunications and telephone systems terminology, technology and equipment; and the principles and practices involved in the operation of telephone and telecommunications systems.

4. Telecommunications systems, including PBX and central-office services

These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices involved in the operation of PBX and central office telecommunications systems, including terminology, equipment used, service features provided, and correcting service problems.

NOTICE TO CANDIDATES: Unless otherwise noted, candidates are permitted to use quiet, hand held, solar or battery powered calculators. Devices with typewriter keyboards, "Spell Checkers", “Personal Digital Assistants", "Address Books", "Language Translators", "Dictionaries", or any similar devices are prohibited. You may not bring books or other reference materials.
