Unit Manager - Critical Care

Residence Requirements:

 THERE ARE NO RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION IN THIS EXAMINATION. The eligible list resulting from this examination will be used to fill one anticipated vacancy at the Erie County Medical Center.

Examples of Duties:

Unit Manager - Critical Care performs registered professional nursing duties in a critical care unit on a twenty-four (24) hour basis; 

CLINICAL:

Oversees the delivery of patient care in a critical care unit;

Directs the overall professional practice of nursing, including but not limited to assessment, care planning, health teaching, discharge

planning and Quality Improvement activities;

Coordinates patient care activities and nursing activities with those of other disciplines and departments;

Collaborates with medical staff to coordinate efficient and effective care;

Provides input into the formulation of patient care standards;

Serves as a resource person to nursing personnel and students;

Maintains proficiency in clinical area;

Completes a minimum of sixteen (16) hours clinical time on a patient care unit per month.

MANAGERIAL:

Establishes goals and objectives for the unit that are consistent with theErieCountyMedicalCenterstrategic plan;

Ensures compliance with standards and policies of the Department of Nursing, hospital administration and accrediting agencies;

Ensures appropriate follow-up of identified educational needs and/or job performance issue;

Oversees the staffing and scheduling of personnel on the unit;

Develops and monitors unit budget to ensure the delivery of quality patient care in a cost effective manner;

Ensures development and implementation of an effective quality improvement plan in conjunction with the quality improvement

coordinator;

Provides input into the development of productivity standards;

Evaluates productivity at the unit level;

Conducts meetings with unit staff on all shifts at least once per month to provide information, discuss problems and facilitate problem

solving;

Participates in inter and intra departmental committees;

Participates in the interviewing and hiring of perspective employees;

Takes corrective action with personnel assigned to the unit, including implementation of progressive discipline process;

Promotes a positive image of the Erie County Medical Center and professional nursing in the community.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must meet the following requirements on or before March 18, 2020:

Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in nursing, health or human services, or administration and three (3) years of clinical nursing experience and in addition, two (2) additional years of clinical nursing experience in an intermediate care setting

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Possession of a license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment.

1.  Graduation from a regionally accredited orNew YorkStateregistered college or university with a Master’s degree in nursing or administration may be substituted for one (1) year of the required non-specialized clinical nursing experience.

2. Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements. 

3. Your degree and/or college credit must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the New York State Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. A grade of "D" or better is necessary for a course to be credited as successfully completed. If your degree and/or college credit was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. You can write to this Department for a list of acceptable companies providing this service; you must pay the required evaluation fee.

Subjects of Examination:

SUBJECT OF EXAMINATION: The only subject of examination will be an evaluation of your training and experience. You are, therefore, asked to include in your application a summary of all pertinent training and experience in sufficient detail so that your background may be evaluated against the duties of the position.

In your summary of training include all college course work, formal in-service training, and seminars you have attended. You must specify either the number of credits received or the number of contact hours and dates of attendance. Also include a copy of your professional license. Specify the date that your license was first issued.

In your summary of experience, you must specify the dates of your employment, the number of hours worked per week, your title, and the main duties for each. Be specific; vagueness and ambiguity will NOT be resolved in your favor. Candidates who submit incomplete applications or documentation may be disqualified.
