Residence Requirements:

CANDIDATES MUST HAVE BEEN LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY FOR AT LEAST ONE MONTH IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING THE DATE OF THE WRITTEN TEST AND MUST BE LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY AT THE TIME OF APPOINTMENT. There is one current vacancy in the Town of Amherst and the annual salary is $59,666 - $83,621.  The eligible list resulting from this examination will be used to fill this vacancy and other appropriate vacancies which may occur in municipalities or districts under the jurisdiction of Erie County Civil Service while this list is active.

Preference may be given to successful candidates who have been residents of the municipality in which the appointment is to be made for one month preceding the date of the certification of the eligible list and who are residents of the municipality at the time of appointment.  Non-residents may be required to become a resident of the appointing municipality if local law so states.

Examples of Duties:

Wastewater Treatment Plant Maintenance Supervisor supervises the activities concerned with the inspection, repair and maintenance of a large municipal wastewater treatment plant and related facilities;

Supervises and participates in the inspection, repair and maintenance of mechanical equipment in a large municipal wastewater treatment plant and related facilities; 

May coordinate maintenance activities utilizing technologies such as computerized maintenance/asset management software solutions;

Plans, schedules and supervises maintenance of a wide variety of specialized mechanical equipment plus buildings, structures and grounds;

Inspects plant frequently to ensure proper maintenance procedures are followed; Determines the necessity for and establishes long-range maintenance programs;

Supervises installation and testing of new or rebuilt equipment;

Coordinates maintenance work between the various trades;

Monitors equipment repair programs to maintain an adequate inventory of spare parts at all times;

Requisitions needed replacement parts and equipment and helps to prepare budgetary projections for the maintenance program;

Supervises all building and grounds maintenance and repair work;

In consultation with the Assistant Superintendent - Maintenance, trains plant maintenance personnel, plans and develops preventive maintenance schedules and repair programs;

Has the responsibility to coordinate the emergency response program with the plant safety staff.


Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates must meet one of the following requirements on or before the date of the written test:

A.) Graduation from a regional accredited or New York State registered two-year college with an associate degree in applied science in mechanical technology or related and five years of responsible supervisory experience in the maintenance of mechanical systems and equipment, two years of which must have been in a wastewater treatment facility; OR,

B.) Graduation from a senior high school or possession of a New York State equivalency diploma and seven years of experience in maintenance supervision as indicated in (A) above, two years of which must have been in a wastewater treatment facility; OR

C.) Satisfactory equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).

1. Your degree and/or college credit must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the New York State Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. A grade of "D" or better is necessary for a course to be credited as successfully completed. If your degree and/or college credit was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. Subjects of Examination:

Subjects of Examination: A test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and /or abilities in the following areas.

Operation, maintenance, and repair of pumps, motors, valves, and mechanical and electrical equipment
These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices involved in the operation, maintenance, and upkeep of various types of mechanical and electrical equipment, including pumps, valves, electric motors, and similar types of equipment.

Reading and interpretation of plans and specifications
These questions test for the ability to read and interpret typical plans, layouts, diagrams, and technical specifications related to mechanical or electrical equipment and systems.

Inspection, operation, maintenance, and repair of basic mechanical equipment
These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices involved in the inspection, operation, maintenance, and upkeep of basic mechanical equipment such as gears, shafts and bearings, power drives, and similar types of basic machinery and mechanical equipment.

Tools of the trade (mechanical)
These questions test for knowledge of the tools, instruments, and equipment typically used in the mechanical trades, including the proper and safe use of this equipment.

Supervision
These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices employed in planning, organizing, and controlling the activities of a work unit toward predetermined objectives. The concepts covered, usually in a situational question format, include such topics as assigning and reviewing work; evaluating performance; maintaining work standards; motivating and developing subordinates; implementing procedural change; increasing efficiency; and dealing with problems of absenteeism, morale, and discipline.

NOTICE TO CANDIDATES:  It is recommended that candidates use a quiet, hand held, solar or battery powered calculator.  Devices with typewriter keyboards, "Spell Checkers", “Personal Digital Assistants", "Address Books", "Language Translators", "Dictionaries", or any similar devices are prohibited.  You may not bring books or other reference materials.
