Poloncarz, Hardwick, Caruana Highlight $2.08 Million Road Reconstruction & Sewer Project
ERIE COUNTY, NY— Today, Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz was joined by Erie County Legislator Kevin Hardwick (R-4th District), Town of Tonawanda Supervisor Anthony Caruana, Town of Tonawanda Highway Superintendent William Swanson, Erie County Commissioner of the Department of Public Works John Loffredo, and representatives of the Erie County and Town of Tonawanda Highway Departments to announce extensive upcoming repairs to Brighton Road. The $2 million project, which will affect the stretch of Brighton between Fries Road and Niagara Falls Boulevard, will include a total road reconstruction along with the construction of new storm sewers, curbs, and the installation of new traffic signals.
Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz said, “The work being done here on Brighton further demonstrates my administration’s commitment to investing in our infrastructure and improving our roads countywide. Brighton road is one of over sixty individual road projects taking place in twenty municipalities in 2014, along with an extensive paving and road maintenance schedule that reaches into all corners of Erie County. The improvements in drainage, road surface, and ADA-compliant sidewalk accessibility here will provide the safer, more user-friendly road that residents, pedestrians, and motorists demand.”
"Our challenge now is to build on this progress and determine how to finish the rest of this road and others in the county highway system,” added Erie County Legislator Kevin Hardwick. “By working together, county and town, executive and legislature, I am certain we can get the job done."
Work on Brighton will begin with the removal of trees, necessary to prepare for the construction of new storm sewers and curbs along the length of the project. The storm sewer portion of the project is anticipated to take between 2-3 weeks and will be done in conjunction with the full road reconstruction, which will begin in mid-September. Wheelchair ramps along with sidewalk connections will be installed at the corners of most of the eleven side streets that intersect Brighton, and two new traffic signals will be installed at Fries Road and Parkhurst. Traffic will be detoured during the project’s duration, with a completion date of November 30.
Town of Tonawanda Supervisor Anthony Caruana said, “We appreciate the County Executive’s and the County’s effort to work on our critically needed infrastructure in our Town, and we thank them for their work on this and other shared projects.”
