“Caregiver: This Day is For You!” Targeted Towards Caregivers of Aging Adults, Memory Impaired Individuals

ERIE COUNTY, NY—The Erie County Department of Senior Services and community partners including the Alzheimers Disease Assistance Center and the Erie County Caregiver Coalition will host a free caregiver workshop and resource event on Saturday, November 7 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Millennium Airport Hotel, 2040 Walden Avenue in Cheektowaga.

“Caregiver: This Day is for You!” is a workshop and resource day that will be free and open to the public. Aimed at helping caregivers of aging adults and memory impaired individuals, the event will feature local field experts volunteering their time to host 15 workshops throughout the day that will cover a wide variety of topics, including activities for those with dementia, dealing with challenging behaviors, legal/financial issues, managing caregiver feelings and discussing wishes for end of life care.

In addition, Dr. Kenneth Garbarino, a geriatric specialist at the Geriatric Center of Western New York, will host a presentation during the lunch hour where he will discuss the impact of the aging process on our memory and the importance of caregivers being mindful of their own health.

Studies have shown that anxiety, depression and anger may affect those who are caring for an aged parent or incapacitated spouse, and these emotions can cloud decision making and impact the health of the caregiver. The workshops offered during the event will help caregivers learn ways to reduce stress and make everyday chores easier.

Supervision and activities for memory impaired adults will be available during the workshop. Attendees must register by Tuesday, Nov. 3 either by calling (716) 858-2177 or sending an e-mail to caregiver@erie.gov.
