First Round of Firefighter 1 Courses of 2015 Released

Redirecting to our new, updated website ...

The training schedule has been updated at www.erie.gov/fire to reflect the first round of Firefighter 1 course offerings (only).

NEW FIREFIGHTER 1 CURRICULUM/STUDENT BOOK FOR 2015:

Major changes to the Firefighter 1 curriculum for 2015 have been shared at county meetings and other venues throughout this past fall. A summary of those changes is attached and included in the revised Firefighter 1 Student Packet 2015 which will be distributed under a separate email.

The new Firefighter 1 (and Firefighter 2 and BEFO-Basic Exterior Firefighting Operations courses) curriculum are based on the IFSTA/Brady Essentials of Firefighting and Fire Department Operations-6th Edition. This book is required at the first class and they may be purchased at the Fire Safety Office at a cost of $85 each. Your fire company or fire district will be billed by the Erie County Fire Chiefs Mutual Aid Organization. FIREFIGHTER 1:

As has been past practice, priority for participation for any given Firefighter 1 course will be given first to students under the host fire control.

PLEASE PRIORITIZE APPLICATIONS - As most Firefighter 1 courses fill up quickly, Chiefs and Training Officers submitting applications for multiple recruits for the same class should assign a priority number to each applicant. This number (with 1 being the highest priority candidate) can be written in the lower right hand corner of each application before it is sent in.

Those attending Firefighter 1 courses should note the dates of the mandatory orientation for each course which must be attended by the student, accompanied by a chief or training officer for only the first two (2) hours.

Students confirmed as attending Firefighter 1 courses should download, review, and share the Firefighter 1-2015 Student Packet* with their officers prior to attending orientation. [*This revised student packet will be published later this week.]

Be sure to include your e-mail address and cell or other phone number on your application to ensure effective communications as the roster is posted and important course information must be distributed.

FIREFIGHTER 1 – AIR CONSUMPTION TEST:

All 14-hour Firefighter 1 Orientations are held at the Erie County Emergency Services Training & Operations Center in Cheektowaga.

If you plan to be or are enrolled in an Erie County Firefighter 1 Class, watch this video to learn what will be expected of you and what you should start practicing for: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRo2SnrR9cg&feature=youtu.be

The air consumption test is not a race, but a test of physical abilities and endurance that establishes a personal benchmark for you to understand just how long a nominal 30 minute air bottle may last you under firefighter working conditions. Instructors will work with you to prepare you to be successful in this training scenario.

It consists of eight (8) stations that simulate real firefighter tasks to be completed on the fireground:

  1. Hose Carry/Stair Climb
  2. Hose Stretch & Hose Pull
  3. Tool Lift/Carry
  4. Ladder Raise
  5. Forcible Entry
  6. Search
  7. Rescue
  8. Ceiling Push/Pull

Recruit Firefighters must complete all eight (8) stations and stay on breathing air for a minimum of 10 minutes. Once all eight (8) stations are completed and the student still has air left in their SCBA cylinder, they will continue to rotate through each station until such time that their air is completely breathed down from their bottle. Each firefighter is partnered with a shadow/escort who monitors them frequently and records their air consumption and time after each station.

Those students who are not successful in the Air Consumption Test will continue on to the HazMat module and should also apply for the new BEFO-Basic Exterior Firefighting Operations course that will be announced shortly.

Review the attachment, check out the video and start preparing. Please share with all existing and future Firefighter 1 students.
