Law allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses opposed in Thursday’s Erie County legislative session
Erie County, NY - Erie County Legislator Kevin Hardwick spoke on the floor Thursday regarding a resolution that was introduced, opposing New York State’s newly enacted “Green Light” legislation which provides driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants. The legislation was recently passed by the New York State Assembly and Senate.
Legislator Kevin Hardwick supported the resolution which opposes the New York State plan to allow undocumented immigrants to apply for driver’s licenses.
“Illegal immigration is a federal issue, not a state one. So until the federal government gets its act together and moves on comprehensive immigration reform, New York State should not be licensing undocumented individuals,” said Legislator Hardwick.
The resolution passed by a vote of 8-2 and was amended to include support for the Erie County Clerk’s office in respect to a lawsuit filed against New York State.
