Water Quality Model
Erie County Department of Health uses a water quality model to predict whether the water is safe for swimming at the following five municipal beaches on Lake Erie:
- Woodlawn Beach State Park
- Hamburg Beach
- Bennett Beach
- Evans Town Beach
- Lake Erie Beach
We use a software program, Virtual Beach, the United States Environmental Protection Administration’s statistically based modeling approach to water quality forecasting. Each beach has its own unique model based on historical data. This modeling approach involves the collection of weather and other environmental data each morning before the beaches are scheduled to open. Most information is tabulated by the United States Geological Survey’s NowCast data compilation service.
The models predict whether the New York State Sanitary Code limit of 235 E.coli colony forming units per 100 mL (cfu/100 mL) will be exceeded. The statistical modeling approach is more accurate than any other method we have available to us for predicting water quality.
For additional information on the water quality models see the Beach Program pamphlet.
