January Date Announced for Free Rabies Clinic in Erie County

Protect Your Family & Pets from Rabies

ERIE COUNTY, NY-- Erie County Executive Mark C .Poloncarz and Commissioner of Health Dr. Gale Burstein are pleased to announce a free rabies vaccination clinic on Wednesday, January 29, 2014. The clinic, conducted by the Erie County Department of Health in association with the Niagara Frontier Veterinary Society, the Medaille College Veterinary Technology Department, and the SPCA serving Erie County, will provide free rabies vaccinations for dogs, cats, and ferrets.

“Our free rabies clinics are a great way for Erie County to help protect families and their pets from rabies” said Poloncarz. “In 2013, over 4,460 animals were vaccinated countywide through these clinics. I strongly encourage pet owners around the County to take advantage of this valuable public health initiative.”

“These vaccinations are a good way to minimize any problems that may arise from contact between wildlife, pets and possibly their human owners” added Burstein. “If residents or their pets have been exposed to a wild animal, or bitten by a dog or cat, they should contact the Erie County Department of Health at 716-961-6800.”

Burstein continued: “We are also pleased to announce a new partnership with Medaille College’s Veterinary Technology Department. With the assistance of Dr. Joseph Savarese, D.V.M., Professor and Chair of Medaille’s Veterinary Technology Department, we are in development of a volunteer program for their students to gain experience in the field of public health at these clinics and see how the animal and the human world work together to protect the public.”

Residents are requested to bring their pet to the clinic either on a leash or in a carrier, and if possible, to bring along the animal’s vaccination record.
