ERIE COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH ANNOUNCES SCHEDULE FOR VETERANS LEAD SAFETY CLASSES IN 2020

Program from the Division of Environmental Health supports veterans and active military pursuing careers in building trades and property management

ERIE COUNTY, NY— The Erie County Department of Health has scheduled classes through March 2020 for its Veterans Lead Safety for Renovations, Repairs and Painting Course. This class is free for veterans and members of the military. Upon completion of this 8-hour class, participants who pass a written exam will earn an EPA Certified Renovator designation, which is a special certification required for all home improvement activity in housing built before 1978 and in any child-occupied facility.

“We offer this course alongside our other lead poisoning prevention programs because lead exposure through lead-contaminated dust, lead-based paint and other sources is harmful, especially to children who live in homes built in 1978 or before,” said Erie County Commissioner of Health Dr. Gale Burstein. “Contractors who are trained in lead safe work practices are able to take steps to address lead hazards, prevent lead contamination during renovations and construction, and protect themselves with appropriate safety measures.”

“Any veteran or service member who wants to work in construction, home improvement, building trades and property management can gain a competitive edge with this valuable safety certification,” said Erie County Veterans Service Agency Director David Shenk. “I would encourage any veteran who works in construction or property management, or who is considering a career in those fields, to sign up for this free class.”

Registration is required and space is limited; participants must present military ID on the day of class. The class is held at 503 Kensington Avenue in Buffalo, behind ECMC, and free parking is available. The schedule has been finalized for the first quarter of 2020. To register, email Work.LeadSafe@erie.gov or call (716) 961-7582 or visit www.erie.gov/lead and search for “Veterans Lead Safety.”
