The Erie County Legislature unanimously granted County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz permission to enter an agreement to obtain federal funding to improve the camera system of the Erie County Sheriff’s Office Air One helicopter at its October 25 session.
The County Legislature approved the acceptance of a $135,935 grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for the Sheriff’s Air Support Unit to purchase a Wescam Camera System to improve security and surveillance in the Port of Buffalo.
“The new camera system for the Sheriff’s Office will allow the county to improve its security missions, including detecting IEDs, and response to catastrophic events and terrorist attacks,” County Legislator Timothy R. Hogues (D-Buffalo), chair of the Public Safety Committee, said. “Erie County can use this equipment to enhance our emergency and disaster responses.”
The Public Safety Committee originally gave the grant unanimous approval, allowing the entire Legislature to vote on its acceptance.
