Erie County Legislator Timothy R. Hogues (D-Buffalo) believes that answers should be found to prevent future occurrences of criminal suspects being incorrectly released from the Erie County Correctional Facility in Alden.
The most recent of a series of incorrect inmate releases occurred March 8, when a man charged with allegedly stabbing his wife at a Buffalo grocery store was incorrectly released due to what some claim was a clerical error. Erie County Sheriff Timothy Howard discussed the situation at the March 22 Erie County Legislature Public Safety Committee meeting.
Sheriff Howard cited a need for increased personnel, because he believes that too many people are working too many overtime hours.
"After Sheriff Howard spoke on the incorrect inmate release from the Alden Correctional Facility at the Public Safety Committee meeting, my main concern is to not only look at the problems, including the overtime situation, but seek solutions," Legislator Hogues, who represents the 1st District and serves as chairman of the Public Safety Committee, said. "This includes short-term solutions, such as increased employee training to better handle these situations. We must be sure the public is not put at risk."
“I believe we should keep this dialogue open and continue to work to prevent this situation from occurring again and to keep Erie County residents safe,” Legislator Hogues concluded.
