Legislator Lorigo announces additional funding for local Boys and Girls Clubs

Erie County Legislator Joseph C. Lorigo is pleased to announce that the Legislature has supported his request for additional funding for the East Aurora, Holland, and EMW Boys and Girls Clubs in the 2015 Erie County budget. The Legislature approved an additional $3,750 at today’s annual Budget Meeting, bringing the total to $15,000 to be shared among the clubs next year.

“With today’s approval, the Legislature has restored the funding for the East Aurora, Holland, and EMW Boys and Girls Club to the 2014 level. In his proposed budget, the County Executive reduced funding and I thought it was important that we find a way to support the rural Boys and Girls Clubs and help them to continue to provide critical programming,” said Legislator Lorigo.

”The funding provided to the Boys and Girls Club of East Aurora is essential to our ability to provide the support needed to assist our members with homework help, tutoring and educational programming that reinforces what a club member learns in school.  Without the support from the county we would not be able to provide these important educational services on a daily basis. Special thanks to Legislator Lorigo and the Legislature for their support in restoring the funding to support that great work that we do for over 325 youth members per day. Your support truly makes a difference in the lives of the youth that we serve,” said Gary Schutrum, Executive Director of Boys and Girls Club of East Aurora.

“Receiving additional funding will help position our organizations to not only survive, but thrive in uncertain economic times, insuring the valuable program services that we all provide for the youth in our communities,” said Tracey Karp, Executive Director, Boys & Girls Club of Elma, Marilla & Wales.

The budgetary process allows the County Executive to veto spending increases made by the Legislature, which then votes to override or accept the veto. Legislator Lorigo urges the County Executive to withhold his veto power and allow this important funding in next year’s budget.

It is important to note that the funding was added into the 2015 budget without raising the bottom line, in fact the Legislature lowered the property tax rate. Legislator Lorigo encourages the County Executive to support the funding and East Aurora, Holland, Elma, Marilla and Wales families.
