Legislator Lorigo delivers educational art kits to West Seneca School District’s middle schools

Thanks to a partnership between Albright Knox Art Gallery and Erie County, thousands of educational art kits are being delivered to local middle schools. On Wednesday, Feb. 25, Erie County Legislator Joseph Lorigo joined West Seneca East Middle School administrators to distribute the kits to students.

“The art kit program is quite unique and puts the work of several renowned artists into the students’ hands.  This provides them with a great opportunity to learn more about the artists, while simultaneously exploring their own individual art skills. Thanks to a generous donation, this program was made possible at no additional cost to Erie County and truly enhances art lessons in the schools,” said Legislator Lorigo.

The kits include all necessary painting supplies along with in-depth educational materials of five celebrated artists: Jacob Lawrence, Frida Kahlo, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Ryman, and Robert Rauschenberg. Each kit contains water color paints, paintbrushes and trays, artists’ coloring crayons, a soft cover book featuring each artist and their respective works, an activity book and art paper.

The funding for the program was made possible thanks to Janet and Peter Boris’ donation to the Albright Knox Art Gallery.

Kits were also delivered to West Middle School.

“The students of East and West Middle are elated about the new art materials. The kits will provide students an opportunity to emulate the work of these artists. We are truly grateful for the resources and look forward to their integration into our art curriculum. The Albright Knox Gallery and the Erie County Legislature have provided us a tremendous resource and we are excited to unlock the possibilities,” said East Middle School Assistant Principal Ryan Mackellar.

The pallets were delivered thanks to John J. Mills Distributing, which is owned by County Legislature Chairman John Mills.
