Legislator Lorigo names West Seneca resident Citizen of the Month for December

Erie County Legislator Joseph Lorigo has named Joseph Cantafio as the Legislature’s Citizen of the Month for December in recognition of his many philanthropic efforts in the community. Cantafio, a resident of West Seneca, was honored by the Legislature during its Dec. 6, 2012 session. Mr. Cantafio was joined by his wife, Karen, and three sons, from left, John, Paul and Daniel.

“I have heard from many people in the community who are thankful for Mr. Cantafio’s dedication and service. His actions are far reaching, helping many individuals through various charity events and service groups. His persistence and humanitarianism deserves praise and it is my honor to thank him for all he does and name him December’s Citizen of the Month in Erie County,” said Legislator Lorigo. “My family and I have known Mr. Cantafio for many years and recognize that he continues to donate his time and expertise for all the right reasons and truly wants to see better for everyone.”

Cantafio is a social studies teacher at West Seneca West High School and has been the head coach of the football team since 2005. His efforts in and out of the classroom, and on and off the football field, have resulted in the success and achievement of numerous students. A member of the West Seneca Lions Club, Cantafio has coordinated drives to benefit the Lions Club’s various missions, including recruiting the help of WSW High School students to actively raise funds for the Lions Club food drive.

He has also served as a chairman of the Variety Club Telethon West Seneca Satellite for 18 years, raising more than $1 million for local children’s charities.

The Legislature introduced the Citizen of the Month Award in January 2012 to honor residents from each of the 11 Districts who have gone above and beyond to serve Erie County.
