Erie County Legislator Joe Lorigo recently honored Erie County Sheriff’s Detective Daniel Walczak who is credited for saving an Orchard Park man’s life.

On April 8, 2021, Daniel Walczak identified a residential shed fire and grass fire and an elderly man in distress. Walczak went through the fire to rescue the man on the ground who was semi-conscious, immobile and surrounded by flames. In doing so, he was able to drag the man away from the fire toward safety. Walczak eventually had help from Orchard Park Police Captain Greg Sheppard and Hillcrest Fireman Tim Gibbons.

Daniel Walczak began his career with the Erie County Sheriff’s Office in 2003 and participated in the FBI’s Hazardous Devices School and became the Commander of the Erie County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad in 2007. He is also a member of the Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team and a veteran of the United States Army.

Legislator Lorigo said, “It was an honor to recognize Detective Walczak's heroic efforts earlier this month.  Due to his selfless act of bravery, a man's life was saved from the fire. Detective Walczak's actions showed true courage that day, and his service to our community is appreciated by all."
