Erie County Legislator Lynn Marinelli (D-Buffalo, Tonawanda) announced the Legislature’s unanimous approval to invest resources into its newest park – Black Rock Canal Park (previously known as the Ontario Street Boat Launch), at its July 19 session. The project is considered another jewel in our waterfront.
“I am so excited to share this good news with the residents of Black Rock and Riverside, particularly the members of the Black Rock Canal Park Advisory Committee. These tireless volunteers have transformed community activism into government action,” Marinelli began. “Without the enthusiasm and hard work of this group – led by Margaret Szczepaniec – this project could not have come this far, this fast.”
Funding for the project – in the amount of just over $1,000,000 – comes in part from the Niagara River Greenway Commission. Additional funds will be allocated from New York State Environmental Protection Funds, NYS Multimodal Program and the NYS Canal Corporation.
“This project is such a win for the community,” Marinelli added. “With a free boat launch in Buffalo, our newest county park will facilitate access to the Niagara River and Lake Erie by the general public. Green space will be added to a developed, urban neighborhood. Bicyclists, kayakers and bird watchers are already enjoying this park that links to developed and developing parcels along the waterfront. Dog walkers will be able to take their “best friends” to a unique dog park with separate areas for small and large dogs.
“In addition to the community volunteers who dreamed of a new park and recreational area for the residents of Black Rock and Riverside, I want to thank County Executive Mark Poloncarz for demonstrating his strong commitment to this project, as well as our partners in state and local government,” Marinelli concluded.
