Legislator Barbara Miller-Williams Successfully Advocated for Increased Funding for Libraries, Public Safety, Youth Programs and Community Service Organizations

Legislator Barbara Miller-Williams along with her Legislative Colleagues, passed the Amendments to the County Executive’s Proposed 2016 Budget with a unanimous vote that ensures that vital service remained intact. The County Executive is expected to approve the Amended Budget. Legislator Miller-Williams championed funding for economic development projects slated to begin in District 1 such as the Buffalo City Mission expansion project and the creation of several jobs through the Budget Amendments.

Legislator Barbara Miller-Williams worked collaboratively with fellow Legislators on the majority of the amendments, to ensure that programs and services maintained funding at sustainable levels.  The 2016 Budgetalso includes a reduction in the property tax rates for all Erie County residents.  Legislator Miller-Williams noted that including this tax cut limited the Legislature's opportunities to fund many worthy initiatives.

“I would like to thank the many constituents and community groups who took their time to share their concerns regarding the 2016 Proposed County Budget. I look forward to continuing our public discussions as we begin deliberations for the 2017 County Budget. It is my intent to host a public meeting regarding the Erie CountyBudget Funding Application Process in February 2016 to outline the entire process for community organizations” stated Legislator Miller-Williams.

Other highlights of the 2016 Budget include increased funding for Legislative District 1 business development initiatives, creation of several new community programs, additional jobs in the Public Safety arena and in the Office of the Comptroller which address concerns regarding oversight of county finances.

The Amended Budget was adopted by the entire Legislature at its Annual Budget Meeting. It is anticipated that the Erie County Executive will not veto the Legislature’s approved Amended Budget. The 2016 Budgetgoes into effect January 1, 2016.
