May 2017 Column - County’s spring/summer events include Haz Waste Collection, Free Rabies Clinics

Erie County has a busy spring and summer ahead, with several events and services that residents should put on their calendars.

The dates for this year’s Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off Days have been announced: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 3 at the ECC South Campus in Orchard Park and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, August 5 at the ECC North Campus in Williamsville. Materials that will be accepted include, pesticides, fertilizers, pool and household chemicals/cleaners; oil-based paints and spray cans; paint thinner, stripper and solvents; batteries (lead acid & rechargeable); oil, gasoline, kerosene and antifreeze; and mercury (thermometers, thermostats, metal). For more information on these events and a complete list of items that will be accepted, or for details on how to properly dispose of latex paint, call the Erie County Household Hazardous Waste 24-Hour Hotline at (716) 858-6800 or visit www.erie.gov/waste.

Also, two Free Rabies Clinics will be held in May: from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, at the Town of Tonawanda Highway Garage, 450 Woodward Ave (off Military Rd. near Sheridan Dr.), Tonawanda, and from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 31 at Broadway Market, 999 Broadway, Buffalo, NY 14212 (Parking Ramp in the back).

The clinics are open to cats, dogs and ferrets. Owners are reminded about the following:

  • Bring pets on a secure collar/harness and leash, or in a carrier.
  • Please avoid using retractable, extended dog leashes. If you are using one, be sure it is no longer than 4 feet and in the locked position.
  • Bring a copy of your pet’s vaccination record, if possible.

I am also happy to announce that this year marks the 11th year that I am hosting Hot Dog Roasts to support the libraries in my district. During the past 10 years, these community events have raised more than $67,000. Thank you to everyone for your support over the years and I hope to see you at this year’s events: 11 a.m. Saturday, June 17 at the Town of Collins Public Library; 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 21 at the North Collins Library; 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 12 at the Eden Public Library; 5:30 p.m. Thursday, July 13 at the Boston Free Library; 4 p.m. Thursday, July 20 at the Concord Public Library; 11 a.m. Friday, July 28 at the Angola Public Library; and 11 a.m. Friday, August 4 at the Orchard Park Public Library.

A reminder that road work is already underway on some roadways, so please be mindful of crews. I will continue to update residents on timelines, detours, etc. as more information becomes available on specific county projects.
