August 2015 Column - Erie County bans dangerous pollutant, protects waterways

After waiting long enough for the federal or state government to take action to ban the sale of cosmetics and personal care products containing microbeads, Erie County took action to protect our water sources. At the July 30 session, the Legislature voted 11-0 to approve a local law that would ban the sale of face washes, toothpastes and any products that contain tiny plastic microbeads. The issue is that these beads are too small to be filtered out of the water at our treatment plants and end up in lakes, rivers and creeks causing many issues.

Orchard Park & West Falls-Colden Hot Dog Roast Fundraisers planned

Erie County Legislator John J. Mills announces the dates for the final two Hot Dog Roast Fundraisers of the year:

  • Friday, August 14, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., at the Orchard Park Library, 4570 S. Buffalo St., Orchard Park
  • Saturday, August 15, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., at the West Falls – Colden Library, 1966 Davis Rd., West Falls in partnership with Majority Leader Joseph Lorigo

Erie County, largest Upstate County in New York, opposes Minimum Wage Board’s Recommendation of $15 for fast food workers

Today, the Erie County Legislature opposed the recent recommendation of a $15 minimum wage for fast food workers in New York State by the New York Minimum Wage Board. Per the recommendation, rates would be raised incrementally in New York City, reaching $15 by 2018. Statewide, chains with at least 30 locations would be forced to pay employees a wage of $15 an hour by July 2021. The county resolution was approved 6-5.

Legislature approves resolution urging County Executive to have open discussion about CPS

Today, the Eric County Legislature approved a resolution requesting the County Executive attend and speak at a special public meeting on the ongoing problems in CPS and the Department of Social Services. The resolution received bipartisan (7-4) support as Legislators from both sides of the aisle recognize the role the County Executive has in this discussion.
