On Saturday, May 28, 2011, Legislator Edward A. Rath, III, R-Amherst, will sponsor a Upstate New York Transplant Services blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Amherst Town Hall parking lot, 5583 Main St. All blood donated during this drive, and at all UNYTS blood drives, remains in the community.
“For many people, the Memorial Day weekend marks the start of the summer season. A time to enjoy traveling, warm weather, cookouts and other activities, but unfortunately, it is also a time of year when blood transfusions have historically been needed the most and blood supply is often low,” said Legislator Rath. “I encourage everyone who is able to donate to stop by and look for UNYTS’s blood mobile.”
All presenting blood donors will receive a coupon for a free Junior Frosty from Wendy's.
Legislator Rath reminds potential donors of some basic guidelines:
- Age requirement is 17 years of age and older (16 year olds may donate whole blood only with a UNYTS signed parental consent).
- Donors must weigh at least 110 pounds.
- If you have had a cold or the flu, you are not eligible to donate until you are symptom free for 48 hours.

The blood drive will be held during the Williamsville Farmers Market, which kicked off its fifth season on May 21. The market is held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays along East Spring Street and features various goods such as local produce, bakery items, cheese, and several other vendors.
