When we need to go to a doctor’s office, grocery shopping, or the pharmacy, most people just hop in our car and go.
Unfortunately, many do not have that option. Some older adults cannot - or no longer wish to - get behind the wheel. Others may be too sick to drive to the doctor for much needed treatments. This is where you can step in and help. If you can drive, your help is invaluable.
RSVP works with many organizations that utilize volunteer drivers, but in particular need right now are:
- American Cancer Society 101 John James Audubon Pkwy., Amherst (716) 689-6982 ext 65257 • Transport ambulatory patients to and from their cancer treatment. The volunteer driver would have to have a valid NY State Driver License, insurance and their own vehicle. Looking for a volunteer to serve 3-4 hours once a week.
- Canopy of Neighbors 1207 Delaware Ave., Buffalo (716) 332-6143 • Drive senior citizens to medical appointments, the grocery store, etc. to help keep them healthy and in their own homes. Volunteers need to use their personal vehicle. Canopy of Neighbors serves seniors living in the 14209 and 14222 zip codes only.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer driver or have any questions for either of these organizations, please call the number listed above to find out how you can get involved.
