April 3,2013- Erie County Sheriff Tim Howard is announcing that an Arcade woman was arrested this morning for driving under the influence of a variety of prescription drugs. Dep. Jeff Ely, was on routine patrol on Clinton St. in the Town of Marilla, when he was flagged down by a concerned motorist, who advised him of a reckless driver heading east on Clinton St. Dep. Ely was able to catch up to the vehicle and observe it weaving dangerously from side to side. A traffic stop was initiated, and field sobriety tests were administered and failed. When Dep. Ely determined that alcohol did not appear to be a factor, he requested that a D.R.E. (Drug Recognition Expert) respond to the scene. Dep. Simon Biegasiewicz, who is the D.R.E. for the Erie County Sheriff's Office, responded to assist Dep. Ely. His evaluation of the driver confirmed that she was under the influence of prescription drugs. Based on this, Dep. Ely placed the driver, Carolyn R. Wapniewski, age 51 of Southview Dr. in Arcade, under arrest for D.W.I. drugs. She was transported to the M.A.C.C. where she consented to have blood drawn, for analysis at the Erie County M.E. Office. She was released on traffic summonses to a third party, and will answer to the charges on a future date in the Town of Marilla Court. In addition to the D.W.I. , she was charged with speed in zone, and failing to keep right. Her vehicle was towed and a 12 hour hold was placed on it. This was the 87th arrest of the year made by the Erie County Sheriff's Office for D.W.I.
