August 13, 2012- An inmate incarcerated at the ECHC attempted to commit suicide on 8/12/12 at approximately 3:16 p.m. Inmate Edward Berezowski, age 54 of Williamsville, NY was brought to the Holding Center on Saturday evening (8/11/12) at about 9:30 p.m. after an earlier incident involving a Best Buy employee on Transit Road in Clarence. During a sales transaction, he reportedly grabbed an employee by his shirt and ripped the employee's nametag off after being told to stop swearing loudly because kids were present in the area. Mr. Berezowski subsequently attacked and choked a store manager throwing him down into a store display.
Berezowski was charged with criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation; harrassment in the second degree and three counts of disorderly conduct. He was booked into the Holding Center pending arraignment in Clarence Town Court.
On Sunday @ approx. 3:07 p.m. Inmate Berezowski was logged into his housing unit. Upon arrival, he did advise staff that he was going into his cell to take a nap. At approximately 3:16 p.m. the deputy supervising this unit began conducting his required safety checks and discovered the inmate hanging from the cell gate by his jail issued orange pants.
The inmate was immediately cut down and CPR was started by responding staff. Mr. Berezowski was transported to Buffalo General Hospital where he is listed in critical condition. The Sheriff's Office is continuing its investigation to ensure all policies and procedures were adhered to.
