Buffalo, NY – Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard reports two Deputies assigned to the Erie County Holding Center were attacked by separate inmate attacks.

Inmate Seymour Atkinson spat on a Deputy at 8:42 p.m. Thursday, while the Deputy was performing working duties on a segregation housing unit at the holding center.  Atkinson, who is currently incarcerated for weapons charges and violating term of his parole, has criminal and administrative disciplinary charges pending from this attack.  Atkinson has two previous assault charges while housed in a detention facility.

About an hour later, in a separate incident in a different housing unit, a Deputy was attacked by an inmate wielding a fire extinguisher which was removed from its mounting unit.  Inmate Orlando Echevarria was disarmed, restrained and secured in an individual unit.  Echevarria is currently in the Erie County Holding Center on assault and harassment charges from the Buffalo Police Department. The inmate faces criminal and administrative disciplinary charges.

Neither Deputy sustained physical injuries and continued their shift.
