Buffalo, NY – Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard reports on March 21, inmate Seymour Atkinson, yet again, attacked a holding center Deputy while being escorted to his housing unit after a court appearance.

A Deputy began to remove handcuffs from the inmate when the inmate suddenly turned and punched the Deputy in the face.  Inmate Atkinson continued to be aggressive toward the Deputy when other Deputies intervened and gained control of the inmate.  Atkinson was secured with mechanical restraints and was escorted to the medical unit.

Personnel from the Erie County Department of Health’s Correctional Health division evaluated the inmate and were later cleared to return to his housing unit.

Atkinson faces additional criminal and administrative disciplinary charges
