The Erie County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team is the only FEMA type one tactical team within the eight counties of Western New York. This team consists of 18 members, 4 of which are FBI certified hazardous device technicians (bomb techs). It is the responsibility of the Sheriff’s Office to handle all requests generated by its agency as well as assist any municipality that does not have a tactical team. Quite often the Sherriff’s Office SWAT team is requested to augment other tactical teams and assist them in their missions. The SWAT team has integrated the use of both explosive detection and narcotics detection canines. To date the Erie County Sheriff’s Office is the only tactical team in the Western New York area certified in explosive breaching. ECSO SWAT maintains the ability to operate within the hours of limited visibility by its use of night-vision and thermal optics. Capable of aerial insertions via fast rope deployment and maintains a tactical rope program that conducted eight successful rescue missions and in 2014 The only SWAT team and police agency certified to operate in a tactical maritime environment.
