June 2, 2012 - Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard reports that a three year-old boy was seriously injured in an accident involving a garden tractor Wednesday evening in the Town of Alden.

A 911 call was received from the Creekside Drive residence at 8:05 PM, reporting that a child had been struck by a tractor.  The Townline Volunteer Fire Company and Rural Metro Ambulance Service were dispatched, along with Sheriff’s Deputies Brandon Stott and Lee Richard.  The first arriving responders found that the child had been walking behind a garden tractor which was being operated by the child’s 69 year-old grandfather.  The grandfather, who was unaware that the child was behind him, put the tractor into reverse, backing over the child.  The child’s foot went underneath the moving deck on the tractor, causing extensive injury to the foot.

The child was treated at the scene by medical personnel from the Fire Company and Rural Metro Ambulance, and was transported to Woman and Children’s Hospital by Mercy Flight.

The child’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.  The investigation is continuing, and all indications are that this was an accident.

Following the incident, the grief-stricken grandfather became combative towards the deputies, and had to be restrained.  He was subsequently arrested and charged with Disorderly Conduct, a Violation, Obstructing Governmental Administration and Reckless Endangerment, both Class A Misdemeanors.  He was taken to the Erie County Holding Center, and released from there on an Appearance Ticket directing his appearance in the Town of Alden Court.
