The Erie County Sheriff’s Office Weapons & Ordnance (WOU) unit is comprised of several specialized teams that work cohesively to respond to call-outs and collect and store seized weapons. This unit consists of SWAT team and Bomb Squad members, along with firearms instructors. The deputies assigned to the Weapons and Ordnance Unit qualify and train hundreds of law enforcement personnel within the Sheriff’s Office, along with other county, town, and village agencies in the use of their assigned firearms. In 2011, the WOU spent nearly 5,500 man hours in firearms training; 360 weapons were surrendered to this unit.
