Changes to Managed Long Term Care/CASA

The following information is in regard to CASA services, as New York State DOH is changing the way participants receive these Medicaid services:

The CASA unit is part of the Long-Term Care Division of Erie County’s Public Health Insurance Program (Medicaid). The function of CASA is to determine the suitability and need for Medicaid Long-Term Care services for some community based elderly or disabled individuals in Erie County. CASA caseworkers, in conjunction with staff from Jewish Family Services, interview applicants seeking home health care services to determine their eligibility and to develop an appropriate care plan. Assistance programs include: personal care aide services, environmental aide services, private duty nursing care, and the Consumer Directed Personal Attendant Program, which allows recipients to recruit, hire and supervise their own aides.

Effective Wednesday, January 1, 2014, the majority of Medicaid recipients in Erie County will be required to enroll into a Managed Care Organization or Managed Long Term Care Plan. Enrollees requiring home care services will receive them from their assigned plan. CASA will still be servicing some clients, but as of January 2, 2014, New York Medicaid Choice must refer them to the CASA unit. Please be advised that the CASA unit will be unable to accept referrals for home care services after December 31, 2013.
