On Wednesday, August 20, 2008, Alexander Meigs Haig Jr., the retired four-star Army General who served as the U.S. Secretary of State under President Ronald Reagan and White House Chief of Staff under Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, stopped by for a visit at the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park near the waterfront's newly opened Central Wharf area. Erie County Veterans Services Director, Dr. Patrick Welch, had the pleasure of introducing the four-star General for the press conference held inside the Naval Park Museum. The event drew representatives from numerous veterans organizations, including the local Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 77 Vice President Jack Michel and Lt. Colonel Terry McGuire of the Veterans of Modern Warfare organization.
