Exemptions


Property Tax Exemptions

The Town of Alden offers various property tax exemptions for qualified property owners. The Assessment Office administers these exemptions as well as exemptions for Erie County, Alden School and Village of Alden property taxes. The deadline for submitting exemption applications is March 1st of each year. Applications are available online at the links below or from the Assessment Office; all applications should be filed at the Assessment Office.


Turning 65?

If you are aged 65 and over, or turning 65 by December 31, 2023 you may be eligible for increased property tax exeemptions. If you currently have the Basic STAR Exemption you may qualify for the Enhanced STAR Exemption. Maximum allowable income for Enhanced STAR  for this year is $93,200 based on 2021 income.

The Town, County, School and Village also offer a seperate exemption for low incmoe senior citizens. Maximum income for this exemption varies and is for home owners turning 65 by December 31, 2023 or already aged 65.

Enhanced STAR Exemption: only for home owners turing 65 in 2023 or already 65+ years and currently have a Basic STAR Exemption. File at Assessment office, must also provide copy of 2021 tax return {federal preferred} and proof of age. Applicant must submit both the exemption application and the income verification form.Deadline is March 1, 2023.

Low Income Senior Citizen Exemption: only for home owners turing 65 in 2023 or already 65+ years . Maximun allowable gross income based on 2021 income: Erie County $37,399; Town of Alden $37,399, Village of Alden $37,399, Alden Central School $ 32,399, Akron School $27,199.  File at Assessment office, along with application, applicant must provide copy of 2021 tax return {federal preferred} and proof of age. Deadline is March 1, 2023.

Veterans Exemption: New York State (NYS) Real Property Tax Law section 458-a provides a limited exemption from real property taxes for real property owned by persons who rendered military service to the United States, provided the property meets the requirements set forth in the law.

The Alternative Veterans' exemption from real property taxation is for qualified residential real property owned by veterans of defined periods of war, veterans who received expeditionary medals, or certain members of their family based on a percentage of assessed value. The alternative exemption is applicable to general municipal and school district taxes, but not to special ad valorem levies or special assessments.

Cold War Veterans' Exemption: New York State (NYS) Real Property Tax Law section 458-b authorizes a limited exemption from real property taxes for real property owned by persons who rendered military service to the United States during the Cold War (defined as September 2, 1945, to December 26, 1991), provided such property meets the requirements set forth in the law.

This exemption from real property taxation is for qualified residential real property owned by Cold War veterans or certain members of their family based on a percentage of assessed value. The exemption is applicable to general municipal taxes and school taxes, but not special ad valorem levies, or special assessments.
