Use of Force Updates - 2 Day Refresher

October 27 - 28, 2021 ERIE COUNTY


In a continued effort to implement the new Division of Criminal Justice Services Use of Physical Force and Deadly Physical Force section of the Basic Course for Police Officers (BCPO), DCJS is planning to offer additional sessions of the 2-day Use of Force Refresher though 2021. 


WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

This course is appropriate for anyone teaching use of force, supervisors, policymakers, and firearms or defensive tactics instructors.  

COURSE TOPICS:

  • Understanding and applying the constitutional requirements for police use of force
  • Penal Law Article 35's interpretation and role in training
  • Force investigations
  • Human performance issues and their implications
  • Supervisory responsibilities
  • Proper report writing

Additionally, this training will serve to familiarize instructors with the new Use of Force and Deadly Physical Force section of the Basic Course for Police Officers, Basic Course for Peace Officers, or the Basic Course for Corrections Officers and is currently required for all who instruct this section.  While the new Use of Force section was specifically developed for basic level training, it is suitable and encouraged to be presented in an in-service environment as well.

This course will be presented by Sergeant Mark Rusin of the Syracuse Police Department and Senior Training Technician Mike Puckett of the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services.  Detective Rusin and Mr. Puckett played an integral role in the development of the training and bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to this training course.

Seating is limited and you must receive confirmation to attend.  Noe everyone who registers will get to attend.
