Residence Requirements:

CANDIDATES MUST HAVE BEEN LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY FOR AT LEAST ONE MONTH IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING THE DATE OF THE WRITTEN TEST AND MUST BE LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY AT THE TIME OF APPOINTMENT. There is one present vacancy at the Erie Department of Health. 

Examples of Duties:

An Anthropologist is responsibile for the collection, identification, processing and analysis of skeletal remains (evidence) in a forensic setting (Medical Examiner’s Office); 

Directs and participates in the search and recovery of human remains;

Makes written records of the conditions of the physical environment; collects evidence and recovers remains;

Examines remains and physical evidence from the scene;

Assists with autopsies for the purposes of identification and/or assessment of skeletal trauma Processes and photographs skeletal remains;

Collects and analyzes other medical information and obtains other social, psychological and biological information; Directs the ordering of tests such as DNA analysis;

Takes or directs the taking of relevant radiographs and interprets them;

Prepares written reports and explains findings; Coordinates release of information with pathologists, law enforcement, medical providers, families and legal representatives; Participates in depositions and provides testimony for court proceedings on anthropology cases;

Ensures secured storage and cataloging of all remains;

Establishes and maintains strict controls and documents on the tracking and possession of remains;

Uploads cases of unidentified human remains into NamUs (National Missing and Unidentified Persons System) and maintains said cases;

Develops, implements and revises policies and procedures relating to forensic anthropology;

Updates and maintains the Medical Examiner’s Mass Fatality Plan;

Acts as a technical expert to Erie County law enforcement and other agencies on forensic anthropology;

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates must meet one of the following requirements on or before the date of the written test:

A. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a PhD degree in Anthropology and two (2) years of experience performing in-depth skeletal trauma analyses in a forensic setting; 

B. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Master’s degree in Anthropology and five (5) years of experience performing in-depth skeletal trauma analyses in a forensic setting.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Board certification in forensic anthropology or the ability to sit for the board examination within 3 years of hire preferred; and

Possession of a New York State Driver’s license at time of appointment and throughout period of employment.

1. Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting the experience requirements.

2. Your degree and/or college credit must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the New York State Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. A grade of "D" or better is necessary for a course to be credited as successfully completed. If your degree and/or college credit was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. You can write to this Department for a list of acceptable companies providing this service; you must pay the required evaluation fee.

Subjects of Examination:

Scopes / Subjects of examination: A test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and /or abilities in the following areas.

Preparing written material
These questions test for the ability to present information clearly and accurately, and to organize paragraphs logically and comprehensibly. For some questions, you will be given information in two or three sentences followed by four restatements of the information. You must then choose the best version. For other questions, you will be given paragraphs with their sentences out of order. You must then choose, from four suggestions, the best order for the sentences.

Understanding and interpreting written material
These questions test for the ability to understand and interpret written material. You will be presented with brief reading passages and will be asked questions about the passages. You should base your answers to the questions only on what is presented in the passages and not on what you may happen to know about the topic.

Evaluating information and evidence
These questions test the candidates' abilities to evaluate and draw conclusions from information and evidence. Each question consists of a set of facts and a conclusion based on the facts. The candidate must decide if a conclusion is warranted by the facts.

NOTICE TO CANDIDATES: Unless otherwise noted, candidates are permitted to use quiet, hand held, solar or battery powered calculators. Devices with typewriter keyboards, "Spell Checkers", “Personal Digital Assistants", "Address Books", "Language Translators", "Dictionaries", or any similar devices are prohibited. You may not bring books or other reference materials.
