Residence Requirements:

CANDIDATES MUST HAVE BEEN LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY FOR AT LEAST ONE MONTH IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING THE DATE OF THE WRITTEN TEST AND MUST BE LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY AT THE TIME OF APPOINTMENT. There are two vacancies at the Erie County  Department of Public Works. 

Examples of Duties:

A Control Technician-Electric performing skilled work on a journeyman level in the installation, checkout and repair of electric and electronic devices for temperature control of building systems and/or electric or electronic control systems for various types of equipment;

Performs skilled work in the installation, maintenance, checkout and repair of electric and electronic devices such as thermostats, damper operators, valve operators, electric-pneumatic switches, hi-limit and low limit controls, temperature and pressure sensors, relays, transmitters, thermisters, transducers, accumulators, detectors, computers, and wiring, conveyor systems, sterilizers, incinerators, cart wash, dishwasher, kitchen and laundry equipment;

Troubleshoots and repairs digital and analog electronic circuits;

Plans work; estimates materials and supplies required; reads and interprets specifications, blueprints and diagrams to determine work required; requests supplies and equipment;

Operates test equipment and hand or power tools; maintains tools, equipment and shop in good condition;

Operates and maintains computerized control systems.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates must meet the following requirements on or before the date of the written test:

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and in addition to either:

A) Completion of two (2) years of study at a recognized community college or technical institute, majoring in electronic technology or a related field, supplemented by three (3) years experience in the installation and maintenance of large scale buildings electric and electronic control systems; or

B) Five (5) years experience in the installation and maintenance of large scale buildings electric and electronic control systems; or

C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B)

1. Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting the experience requirements.

2. Your degree and/or college credit must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the New York State Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. A grade of "D" or better is necessary for a course to be credited as successfully completed. If your degree and/or college credit was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. Subjects of Examination:

Subjects of Examination: A test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and /or abilities in the following areas.

Basic electronics, including electrical and electronic circuitry, schematics and wiring diagrams
These questions test for knowledge of the concepts, principles, and practices involved in basic electronics, including electrical and electronic circuitry, schematics, and wiring diagrams; and may include such areas as the concepts of voltage, current, and resistance; the identification and function of circuit and solid state components; and the ability to interpret electrical and electronic schematics and wiring diagrams.

Use of electronic test equipment
These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices involved in the use of electronic test equipment, including identification and proper selection of electronic test equipment.

Repair, maintenance, and operating characteristics of electronic equipment
These questions test for knowledge of the operating characteristics, proper maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electronic equipment.

Operation, maint & repr of equipment used in instrumentation, including meters, sensors, indicators, recorders and data acquisition equipment
These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices involved in the operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment used in electronic instrumentation, including meters, sensors, indicators, recorders, and data acquisition equipment. Topics covered will include equipment identification, selection, measurement, maintenance, and data interpretation.

Mechanical, electrical and pneumatic principles
These questions test for knowledge of the basic mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic principles involved in the operation of electro-mechanical instrumentation and control systems.

NOTICE TO CANDIDATES: Unless otherwise noted, candidates are permitted to use quiet, hand held, solar or battery powered calculators. Devices with typewriter keyboards, "Spell Checkers", “Personal Digital Assistants", "Address Books", "Language Translators", "Dictionaries", or any similar devices are prohibited. You may not bring books or other reference materials.
