Residence Requirements:

RESIDENCE REQUIREMENTS: CANDIDATES MUST HAVE BEEN LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY FOR AT LEAST ONE MONTH IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING THE DATE OF THE WRITTEN TEST AND MUST BE LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY AT THE TIME OF APPOINTMENT. The annual salary range for positions at the Buffalo and Erie County Central Library & City Branches is $29,428 - $38,027 and for Contracting Libraries (Amherst, Cheektowaga, Hamburg, Town of Tonawanda) the annual salary range is $29,428 - $38,027.

Successful candidates will be placed on the eligible list for Erie County. When certification is made to town libraries, it may be limited to candidates who were legal residents of that municipality for one month immediately preceding the date of the written test and are legal residents of the same municipality at the time of certification.

Examples of Duties:

Library Clerk performs routine library clerical tasks necessary for the proper organization and distribution oflibrary materials;

Arranges or files materials according to library filing rules;

Performs routine searches of and updates to computer records;

Issues borrowers cards according to library procedures;

Performs routine circulation, reserve and overdue functions;

Makes and checks routine arithmetic computations;

Operates office machinery such as photocopiers, fax machines or computers;

Answers the telephone and takes messages;

Makes telephone calls to patrons and/or library vendors overseeing the status of library materials;

Types cards, lists labels or short entries on forms;

Assists with programming for the public, e.g. childrens' story hour.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must meet the following requirements on or before the date of the written test:

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and six months of library experience performing page or clerical duties.

Notes:

1. Office clerical experience may be substituted for the high school requirement on a year-for-year basis.
2. Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full time experience requirements.

If you do not have Internet access, you may obtain a copy by sending a stamped, self-addressed envelope (size required to accommodate the guide – manila 10" x 13") to the Erie County Personnel Department, 95 Franklin Street, Buffalo, New York 14202 or by picking one up in person at Room 604.

Subjects of Examination:

SUBJECTS OF EXAMINATION: A written test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and /or abilities in the following areas:

ALPHABETIZING – These questions are designed to test a candidate's ability to file material accurately in alphabetic order.

RECORDKEEPING – These questions are designed to test a candidate's ability to perform common record keeping tasks. The test consists of two or more "sets" of questions, each set concerning a different problem. Typical recordkeeping problems might involve the organization or collation of data from several sources; scheduling; maintaining a record system using running balances; or completion of a table summarizing data using totals, subtotals, averages and percents.

CLERICAL OPERATIONS WITH LETTERS AND NUMBERS – These questions test a candidate's visual perception and basic clerical accuracy in working with alphanumeric characters. The candidate is required to read, compare check, reorder and count letters and numbers following specific directions for each question. Knowledge of the alphabet and the ability to count are required.

NOTICE TO CANDIDATES: Unless otherwise noted, candidates are permitted to use quiet, hand held, solar or battery powered calculators. Devices with typewriter keyboards, "Spell Checkers", " Personal Digital Assistants", "Address Books", "Language Translators", "Dictionaries", or any similar devices are prohibited. You may not bring books or other reference materials.

Send or bring check or money order made payable to Erie County Personnel Department and write the examination number(s) on your check or money order.
