Residence Requirements:

CANDIDATES MUST HAVE BEEN LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY FOR AT LEAST ONE MONTH IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING THE DATE OF THE WRITTEN TEST AND MUST BE LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY AT THE TIME OF APPOINTMENT. At present there are two vacancies at the Erie County Division of Sewerage Management.

A promotion examination will be held at the same time as this examination. The list resulting from the promotion examination will be used first but appointments from this open competitive examination are anticipated. Use of the list may be suspended after it is one year old for any position which it is practical to fill through a new promotion examination.

Examples of Duties:

An Senior Electronics Technician-Wastewater Facilities is involved in the  planning, coordination and supervision of the design, development, operation, and maintenance and repair of scientific, electronic, and other electrical equipment used at wastewater treatment plants and pump stations;

Supervises and performs major and minor repairs on such electronic equipment as generators, motors, telemetry equipment both radio transmitted and audio tone type, variable and constant speed pump drive controllers, industrial controllers, and a wide variety of instrumentation such as flow meters, oxygen analyzers, toxic gas detectors, micro processors, and computers;

Supervises and performs the design, fabrication and installation of various types of electronic and electrical equipment and systems used in wastewater treatment plants and pumping stations;

Calibrates and tests all instrumentation systems for accuracy and makes adjustments and repairs as necessary;

Diagnoses and troubleshoots problems in electronic and electrical circuits and boards and performs the necessary repairs;

Sets up and maintains preventative maintenance schedules for all electrical and instrumentation equipment;

Directs and inspects the work of electronic technicians in the repair of electronic equipment and systems;

Requisitions supplies and parts, maintains inventories and keeps records of repairs, equipment and supplies;

Trains subordinate personnel in the proper procedures and techniques for troubleshooting and repairing electrical and electronic equipment;

Keeps abreast of latest developments in the field of electronics;

Utilizes computer software such as word processing, spreadsheet and database applications;

Creates, edits and completes work orders in CMMS;

Performs data entry.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates must meet one of the following requirements on or before the date of the written test:

A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two (2) year college or university with an Associate's degree in electronics and six (6) years of experience in the maintenance, repair and fabrication of electronic equipment, at least two (2) years of which specifically involved the repair of sewerage facilities equipment; or:

B) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and eight (8) years of experience in the maintenance, repair, and fabrication of electronic equipment, at least two (2) years of which specifically involved in the repair of sewerage facilities equipment; or:

C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a New York State Class D driver license.

1. Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting the experience requirements.

2. Your degree and/or college credit must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the New York State Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. A grade of "D" or better is necessary for a course to be credited as successfully completed. If your degree and/or college credit was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. You can write to this Department for a list of acceptable companies providing this service; you must pay the required evaluation fee.

Subjects of Examination:

Subjects of Examination: A test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and /or abilities in the following areas.

Basic electronics, including electrical and electronic circuitry, schematics and wiring diagrams
These questions test for knowledge of the concepts, principles, and practices involved in basic electronics, including electrical and electronic circuitry, schematics, and wiring diagrams; and may include such areas as the concepts of voltage, current, and resistance; the identification and function of circuit and solid state components; and the ability to interpret electrical and electronic schematics and wiring diagrams.

Use of electronic test equipment
These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices involved in the use of electronic test equipment, including identification and proper selection of electronic test equipment.

Repair, maintenance, and operating characteristics of electronic equipment
These questions test for knowledge of the operating characteristics, proper maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electronic equipment.

Operation, maint & repr of equipment used in instrumentation, including meters, sensors, indicators, recorders and data acquisition equipment
These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices involved in the operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment used in electronic instrumentation, including meters, sensors, indicators, recorders, and data acquisition equipment. Topics covered will include equipment identification, selection, measurement, maintenance, and data interpretation.

Mechanical, electrical and pneumatic principles
These questions test for knowledge of the basic mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic principles involved in the operation of electro-mechanical instrumentation and control systems.

Supervision
These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices employed in planning, organizing, and controlling the activities of a work unit toward predetermined objectives. The concepts covered, usually in a situational question format, include such topics as assigning and reviewing work; evaluating performance; maintaining work standards; motivating and developing subordinates; implementing procedural change; increasing efficiency; and dealing with problems of absenteeism, morale, and discipline.

Devices with typewriter keyboards, "Spell Checkers", “Personal Digital Assistants", "Address Books", "Language Translators", "Dictionaries", or any similar devices are prohibited.
