Residence Requirements:

CANDIDATES MUST HAVE BEEN LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY OR AN ERIE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT* FOR AT LEAST ONE MONTH IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING THE DATE OF THE WRITTEN TEST AND MUST BE LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY OR AN ERIE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT* AT THE TIME OF APPOINTMENT. Preference may be given to successful candidates who have been residents of the municipality in which the appointment is to be made for one month preceding the date of the certification of the eligible list and who are residents of the municipality at the time of appointment. Non-residents may be required to become a resident of the appointing municipality if local law so states. * Candidates who reside in a school district which, for civil service purposes is administered by the Erie County Personnel Commissioner, but who are not legal residents of Erie County may apply for examination. However they will be certified for appointment only in the school district in which they are legal residents.

There is one vacancy at Erie One BOCES with a starting salary of $17.02 per hour.  There is also one vacancy at the Erie County Water Authority with an annual salary range of $51,188 - $53,456.  **Salaries vary among municipalities and districts. The eligible list resulting from this examination will be used to fill this vacancy and other appropriate vacancies which may occur in municipalities or districts under the jurisdiction of Erie County Civil Service while this list is active.

Under current New York State Law, candidates seeking employment with school districts in New York State will be required to undergo fingerprinting and a criminal history background check prior to appointment. A processing fee may be required.

Examples of Duties:

Stores Clerk receives, checks, stores and delivers institutional supplies and maintains inventory and supplies records; 

Receives and checks deliveries for quantity, quality and condition against purchase orders, suppliers’ invoices or other necessary authorization or records;

Sorts and stores supplies;

Fills requisitions and delivers orders to department;

Keeps inventory and supply related records and prepares reports;

Assists in physical inventories;

Performs routine maintenance on and may make minor repairs to equipment;

Breaks down and bottles or re-packages bulk receipts;

Dispenses gasoline to cars;

Operates lift trucks when required;

May occasionally operate an alpha-numeric keyboard to transcribe data to either punch cards, tapes, magnetic discs or directly to a computer;

Issues and delivers needles and syringes, as well as other controlled items, performs a monthly inventory;

Receives, processes and distributes office supplies and medical gas cylinders;

Orders, receives, checks, stocks and distributes consignment items.

ADDITIONALLY, IF ASSIGNED TO CENTRAL SUPPLY AT ERIE COUNTY MEDICAL CENTER CORPORATION:

Assembles and distributes various medical carts, such as code cart and isolation cart, to appropriate staff as necessary;

Receives and delivers specimen collections as requested.

 

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates must meet one of the following requirements on or before the date of the written test:

A.) Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of an equivalency diploma; or:

B.) Completion of two (2) years of high school supplemented by one (1) year of satisfactory experience as a stores clerk or in a related position; or:

C.) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).

Notes:

Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.

Subjects of Examination:

SUBJECTS OF EXAMINATION: A written test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and /or abilities in the following areas:

1. Arithmetic computation with calculator

These questions test for the ability to use a calculator to do basic computations. Questions will involve addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. You may also be asked to calculate averages, to use percents, and to round an answer to the nearest whole number. You should bring with you a hand-held battery- or solar-powered calculator for use on this test. You will not be permitted to use the calculator function of your cell phone.

2. Keeping simple inventory records

These questions test for the ability to follow instructions in keeping simple inventory records of different materials received and distributed from a central location. The ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide will be required. You may have to compute total costs from quantities (number of units) and cost or price per unit. Knowledge of specific record keeping systems and techniques will not be needed.

3. Name and number checking

These questions test for the ability to distinguish between sets of words, letters, and/or numbers that are almost exactly alike. Material is usually presented in two or three columns, and you will have to determine how the entry in the first column compares with the entry in the second column and possibly the third. You will be instructed to mark your answers according to a designated code provided in the directions.    

NOTICE TO CANDIDATES:  It is recommended that candidates use a quiet, hand held, solar or battery powered calculator.  Devices with typewriter keyboards, "Spell Checkers", “Personal Digital Assistants", "Address Books", "Language Translators", "Dictionaries", or any similar devices are prohibited.  You may not bring books or other reference materials.

A $20.00 filing fee is required for this exam. The required fee must accompany your application. Send or bring check or money order made payable to Erie County Personnel Department and write the examination number(s) on your check or money order. Do not send or bring cash, as the County cannot be responsible for cash payment.
