Concussion Law Training
Preventing Head Trauma from Concussions in Youth Sports
ERIE COUNTY, NY—Two June training sessions will be offered by the Erie County Department of Health (“ECDOH”) for supervisors of youth contact sports to learn about preventing, identifying and properly dealing with concussion-related symptoms in participants in Erie County youth contact sports leagues. There is no charge for the training. Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion at the end of the training.
Contact and collision sports such as football, hockey, soccer and other sports, where head trauma can occur, have been an integral part of youth development. However, there is growing evidence that concussions can cause negative long-term health consequences. Pursuant to Erie County Local Law 3 of 2016, supervisors of youth contact sports leagues are required to take a concussion training course.
This legislation seeks to ensure that all minors playing organized contact or collision youth sports within Erie County are properly supervised, and that the responsible adults (e.g., coaches, managers) who have been entrusted with the safety of these minors are sufficiently trained in identifying and properly dealing with concussion related symptoms. Any supervisors of minors playing organized contact or collision sports are required to complete appropriate training in concussion safety.
Acceptable alternatives to the ECDOH concussion safety course are:
- Center for Disease Control and Prevention (“CDC”) HEADS UP to Youth Sports: Online Training
- National Federation of State High School Associations(“NFHS”) Concussion in Sports Course
- Other concussion protocol training determined ECDOH to be equal to or greater than the CDC’s HEADS UP to Youth Sports Course.

“By utilizing what they learn in this training, youth team coaches throughout Erie County will gain the necessary knowledge to avoid head trauma among their players and to act appropriately with a suspected concussion,” said Dr. Gale Burstein, Erie County Commissioner of Health.
