What is a Vector?
A vector is an organism that transmits disease by conveying pathogens from one host to another, serving as a route of transmission.
- Bats - Rabies (Raccoons, Skunks, Foxes are presumed to be rabid & other mammals are suspected to be rabid unless testing proves otherwise. Generally wild/free-roaming rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, rats and mice are not a concern for rabies transmission.
- Rats - Leptospirosis (Other diseases directly transmitted by rodents)
- Ticks - Lyme Disease
- Mosquitoes - West Nile Virus, Zika Virus, Eastern equine encephalitis virus & other emerging arboviruses
Note: Bed bug, cockroach or other insect infestations are not a disease vector!
