Erie County Legislator Frank Todaro recently introduced a resolution calling for a full reopening of the Canada-United States border that has passed the Erie County Legislature unanimously.

On August ninth, the Canadian Government reopened the border to citizens of the United States to cross into Canada for any reason so long as they are vaccinated and follow certain crossing procedures; however, the United States is continuing to restrict crossing from Canada to the United States by Canadian citizens, with certain exceptions.

On top of the emotional toll it has taken on families who have been separated for over a year and a half, the border closure has had an extreme economic toll as well. The US travel Association estimates a loss of $1.5 billion in exports each month.

Legislator Todaro said, “I introduced the resolution for full reopening of the Canada-United States border with one thing in mind—families. It is absolutely disgusting to me that families have been separated for over a year and a half to something that has become so politicized. There isn’t one good reason to continue to keep this border closed and I will continue my advocacy until something is done.”
