Basic Public Information Officer Training Course

October 5 - 7, 2015


The NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services periodically provides specialized training for law enforcement.  Public Information Officer is a specialized position that requires training to be an effective liaison between a police organization and the media.  The Office of Public Safety is pleased to provide the Basic Public Information Officer Training.  This course will be offered in Erie County on October 5-7, 2015. The training will be presented by Captain John Cooney, retired Public Information Officer from the City of Troy Police Department.

The Basic Public Information Officer course is a comprehensive presentation of the basic guidelines, skills, and knowledge needed to capably perform the duties of a Law Enforcement Public Information Officer.  This course will introduce the student to the position, explore and encourage the required mindset to efficiently carry out the duties of the position and teach the skills, techniques and "tricks of the trade" of the PIO position. In addition, the student - through practical exercises - will become proficient in preparing and conducting media briefings, on-camera interviews and publication of media correspondence.  Participants in this course must be prepared to participate in practical, positive exercises which will require them to openly share thoughts and opinions, assume public speaking roles and experience in-house on camera exposure.

Necessary Equipment:

Attendees are encouraged, but not required to bring any equipment they would find necessary to have in performance of their PIO duties iwth the exception of a desktop computer and printer.  Smart phones with email/texting capability are highly recommended; camera or camera phone is required.


There is no course fee to attend the above listed training dates. Due to the hands-on nature of the training, seats are limited. Therefore, you must receive confirmaiton on attendence. Please complete the course application and have it sent no later than two weeks prior to the start of the course.
