Effectively Responding to Emotional Crisis

Almost every call for service involves complex emotions such as anger, fear, frustration and sadness.  Effectively communicating an emotional crisis is an essential skill for law enforcement officers.

The New York State Office of Mental Health, Division of Forensic Services is pleased to offer a training program designed to assist police officers in recognizing emotional distress and preparing them to de-escalate emotionally charged situations in order to achieve a safer resolution for both the public and the officers.  

The course will cover multiple topics, including:

  • A review of the signs, symptoms, and indicators of mental illness
  • Understanding communication, interpersonal dynamics and self-preservation
  • Techniques for de-escalating and intervening in situations with emotionally distressed persons
  • Opportunities to observe and participate in scenario training to further develop skills
Jeffrey Nixon, is retired Police Chief of the Groton Long Point Police Department, Groton, Connecticut.  Chief Nixon previously served as the Waterford Police Department's Crisis Intervention Team leader, is a state certified instructor with the Connecticut Alliance to Benefit Law Enfocement (CABLE) and has been an adjunct professor at Three Rivers College since 2000.

Raymond Hassett, is a retired Lieutenant of the New Haven, Connecticut Police Department.  He is a trained FBI Hostage negotiator and currently a Contractor for the US Senate Department, Bureau of Diplomatic Security, teaching the Art of Negotiation to foreign Police Agencies.

Carrie Wong, has worked for the NYS Office of Mental Health, Division of Forensic Services, Mental Health Criminal Justice Collaboration Unit since 2013.  Prior to her tenure at OMH, Carrie worked for the Albany County Mobile Crisis Team for over 15 years and has been a Police Mental Health Recruit Instructor since 2002.

The session will be held:

ERIE COUNTY - AUGUST 7, 2019

Pre-Registration is required.  All interested parties must registrer 3 weeks prior to the class.  We expect a lot of interest and seats are limited.  The location of training and class times will be provided through an email confirmation; therefore, you must register in order to attend.
