Forensic Statement Analyst

March 17 - 19, 2015

The New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, Office of Public Safety is pleased to announce a three-day “Forensic Statement Analysis” training designed to use a methodical analysis of statements of witnesses and suspects in investigations.

Forensic Statement Analysis is the structured examination of an individual's verbatim words.  It is used as an investigative tool to gain insight into an individual and to detect areas of possible deception.  This course is designed to provide investigators with a structured method of examining verbal and written communication. Investigators will develop specific linguistic tools to use in analyzing statements provided by witnesses, victims and suspects.

Investigators will learn the importance of recording accurately the verbal and written words of witnesses.  Investigators will participate in a group practical exercise to use the knowledge gained through statement analysis to gain insight into a statement and, in criminal cases, to enhance the prospects of gaining confessions through the amplification of the statement.  In addition to many practical exercises, instructional methods will include case studies, demonstrations and group discussion to reinforce the techniques taught in class.

Due to the participatory nature of the class, the number of officers is limited and is best suited for fully dedicated individuals that have some familiarity with interviewing.  Therefore, you must receive confirmation on attendance.  Please complete the course application and have it sent no later than two weeks prior to the start of the course.

For your convenience it may be submitted via email by utilizing the “Submit by Email” radio button on the Course Application form.  The application may be downloaded by clicking here. If this link does not work, go to the bottom of this announcement under "Additional Info" and find the application form there.
